The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton

The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton is an easy yet fantastic summer read. It is from the point view of Ponyboy Curtis who lives in a society where power means everything. The boy struggles with his life ever since his parents' death which leaves him no choice but to look up to his brothers and gang for support. The members of his gang are known as the Greasers for their signature greasy hair and lower class lifestyle, while their rivals, the Socs, are shown as snobby, rich kids who love to pick up a fight. With both groups constantly battling for the throne within their town, Ponyboy has to learn the hard way between what is right and wrong and even gets himself into a huge mess that only he can fix. Careless actions lead into major conflicts and will make you grip onto the book until the last page. This is definitely one of my all time favorite books and I’m sure anyone who gets his/her hands on it will enjoy it as much as I did.

  1. I remember watching the movie of this book in Churchill, it was pretty good. I bought this book a while back but never got around to reading it, maybe I'll actually get around to that. Sounds like an interesting book, I'll be sure to check it out!

  13. I know a lot of people who have recommended this book, but I never got to read it! It seems so interesting, and I wonder what will end up happening to Ponyboy Curtis. The whole gang fighting reminds me a bit of Romeo and Juliet, as well as West Side Story. Kristen Connolly (period 3)

  15. I read the book and saw the movie- I loved them both! If you like books by Hinton, check out "That Was Then, This Is Now". It's a great coming-of-age story similar to "The Outsiders", and bears a bunch of similarities to it.

Outsiders is similiar to That was THen This is Now. It shows the importance of decisions and how our peers affect them. S.E. Hinton develops characters with perfect traits for her suspenseful books.

  24. I remember reading this book in eighth grade. I thought it was only okay, but that might have been influenced by the teacher I had. Its sequel, however, That Was Then, This Is Now, was an amazing read. Jake M, Pd 3
