Soul Surfer by Bethany Hamilton

Soul Surfer is one of the most famous, inspirational books. It is a true story about faith, strength, and family. Bethany Hamilton is very passionate about surfing, as described "she was born with salt water in her blood" and she practices the sport every hour in her life. She has two brothers who help her; one is a surfing photographer and the other is a body border.  After a shark attack on Halloween night, Bethany has to make a decision on whether to give up her surfing life or continue on. Her best friend , Alana is very close to her and supports her the whole time. In the book, Bethany explains how her life has changed, how she was influenced by the attack, and some of the greatest accomplishments she has done. I recommend the book to anyone specifically teenagers and anyone who  likes non-fiction books. It is very moving and it teaches many great lessons.  -Merna Kamel Period 12

  8. This non-fiction book is different in the way it makes the reader feel and think about certain situations. Bethany looks like a person that is determined to do anything no matter what obstacles come in her way. I feel like this book is very relatable to many people who have given up on a specific sport or dream. It would encourage them to keep going. Bethany was able to do a hard sport with one hand, I am sure we can do anything. Recently, I saw her on a show on NBC called The Biggest Loser. On the show, she was so inspiring and happy. She would always encourage others and believe in them. I believe everyone can learn a little something from Bethany.

  11. I actually just watched this movie a little while ago. It was really good and the way Bethany made a come back was also really inspirational. I could never even imagine myself doing something like that if I had got my arm bitten off by a shark. I probably would still be hiding out in my room and had vowed to never go in the water again. I really want to read the book, while the movie was good, I think it would be neat to have a first hand account of the events and read how she personally felt.
